Who Sail the World is my long term project photographing sailing women in the southern coast of Finland.
This work is a tribute to the community of girl sea scouts in Turku, in which I had the opportunity to grow up. Girl sea scouting is a hobby where young women teach younger girls the essentials of navigating the rocky seascape, as well as how to maneuver and maintain their boats. This unique learning environment allows girls to develop practical skills and to explore the prestigious, UNESCO-listed archipelago regardless of their socioeconomic background. It is also a close-knit community that has preserved the knowledge and traditions of archipelagic leisure life for over half a century. The culture has developed independently of both military and commercial seafaring traditions, emphasizing care, interdependency, and reciprocity—both in its relationship with nature and among its members.
